Papadum: A Crispy and Tasty Indian Snack
Papadum, also known as papad, is a thin, crispy Indian snack that is typically served as an appetizer or accompaniment to a meal. Made from a variety of ingredients, such as lentil, chickpea, or rice flour, these disc-shaped crackers are seasoned with various spices and herbs and then deep-fried or roasted. Here is a simple recipe for making papadum at home.
Ingredients to make Papadum
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Urad Dal Flour (or split black gram flour)
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida (hing)
- 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
- 1/4 cup Water (as needed)
- Vegetable Oil (for frying)
How to make Papadum
Instructions:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the urad dal flour, cumin seeds, salt, asafoetida, and baking soda.
Gradually add water to the bowl, mixing until a smooth and slightly sticky dough forms. You may not need to use all of the water.
Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes, or until it is smooth and elastic.
Divide the dough into 10-12 equal portions and roll each one into a ball.
On a floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a thin, round disc, about 5-6 inches in diameter.
Place the discs on a plate or baking sheet and let them dry in the sun or in a warm, dry place for 1-2 days. Alternatively, you can use a dehydrator or oven to dry the discs.
When the discs are completely dry and crispy, heat a few inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or wok.
Fry the discs in the hot oil, one at a time, until they are puffed up and lightly golden. This should take only a few seconds per disc.
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the papadum to a paper towel-lined plate to drain off any excess oil.
Serve the papadum as a snack or accompaniment to a meal, with chutney, pickle, or yogurt on the side.
Papadum is a crispy and tasty Indian snack that is perfect for snacking or serving as an appetizer. With its unique texture and flavor, papadum is a fun and easy snack to make at home. So, give this recipe a try and enjoy the delicious taste of homemade papadum!
